London is a big intimidating city and like many
people moving to here, I found myself feeling very alone with no real way to
meet friends.
At the beginning of 2009 my housemates and I made a New Years Resolution to learn dancing. When we discovered Jive Nation had several central London locations, we decided we had to go. It was so convenient to get to from work.
Admittedly getting started was scary. I didn’t know anything about dancing or whether I could do it. I was nervous but the Jive Nation teachers and staff were so friendly that within a few minutes of arriving I was put at ease.
The constant changing of partners throughout the lessons felt like speed dating but without the pressure of finding a mate. It allowed me to recognise faces and names very quickly. In the beginning I was afraid to ask people to dance, but at the end of a few classes, everyone felt like friends, so there was no problem.
After my first class I was totally exhilarated – and completely hooked. I started attending twice a week and can honestly say I’ve never had so much fun. As with any hobby, the more you put in, the more you get out. Staying after class for freestyle and accepting dancing with advanced Dancers has done wonders, not only for my dancing, but also for my self confidence.
The great thing about Jive Nation is that you can’t sit on the sidelines for too long. The evenings are very inclusive with everyone keen to make new friends. The teachers socialise with the beginners and regularly go out for social drinks. Plus there are plenty of workshops and dance parties to mix, mingle and have lots of fun. The friends I’ve made through Jive Nation have made my time in London so special. Things have really turned around for me since my lonely beginning and I have everyone at Jive Nation to thank.
